Cumrye Sheltered Housing is a place where members of our community who can no longer live independently are able to get the support they need to live in dignity near their families, friends and the villagers that love them. Residents of Cumrye are a valuable part of our community – from members of the Amenities committee, Evergreens social club to volunteers at all of our social events, if something is happening in our area, Cumrye will be there. Having these services available has enabled members of our community to stay close to their families long after they may have been moved to a bigger town or city – giving us years of time with children, grandchildren and great-grand doggies. People of Monquhitter have made plans for their future to move to the bungalows when they’re no longer able to manage the stairs in their own homes, expecting to leave farms to the next generation, but retaining their opportunities to watch their village grow up.
Unfortunately, with cuts that are coming from Aberdeenshire Council, Cumrye is being threatened with closure. We have been informed that it is one of the poorer performing Sheltered Housing facilities, and that the residents are less happy due to the lack of facilities in Cuminestown. This is despite the fact that the lack of facilities in Cuminestown and the Monquhitter area generally are down to Aberdeenshire Council cuts and mis-management during previous budgets.
Our community have decided to fight back. These are our families, our friends, our neighbours. After a decade of cuts from the Council to facilities like public transport and health, it is not surprising rural towns like Cuminestown are being left behind. It is time to reverse the cuts and we are calling on all residents of Monquhitter to join us.
